About the Work
Featured in the R.W. Norton Art Gallery’s New Orleans in Art exhibit, The House That Grew Wings is the third piece in The Crescent Wilds mixed media collage art series. More dramatic in tone, this collage captures the shimmering calm just after a storm—where beauty and magic rise from what was heavy.
A lone mermaid rests atop blooming flowers, gazing toward a radiant rainbow as she holds purple blossoms blowing in the wind. Petals drift through a sky still thick with clouds, while gators with butterfly wings float above a pink shotgun house that has grown translucent wings, lifting gently toward the light. String lights sway between the clouds, their glow echoing the spirit of celebration that endures across the South even in hardship.
The House That Grew Wings honors transformation not as escape, but as elevation—an ode to the strength it takes to rise, rebuild, and grow wings after weathering life's many storms.
