About the Work

Bayou Love Letter is a playful, exaggerated romance set somewhere between a Fragonard painting and the Louisiana bayou. A woman in an extravagant lavender gown sits among an abundance of flowers, absorbed in a love letter while cherubs hover overhead, carrying the scene into the realm of pure romantic fantasy.

But this is the bayou, after all—and even the love story has a little danger lurking beneath it. Hidden in the lower corner, an alligator watches from the bushes as a cherub takes aim with his bow, adding a mischievous twist to the sweetness of the scene.

Inspired by the lush gardens, flirtatious figures, and theatrical romance of Rococo painting, Bayou Love Letter pushes that visual language to an intentionally excessive place. Flowers spill across the landscape, cherubs populate the sky, and romance seems to have taken over every inch of the bayou. The result is a dreamy Southern love story where Fragonard meets the swamp, and courtship comes with a little more teeth.
